POLICE & FIRE TRAINING FACILITY & INTERIOR RENOVATIONS, & MIZNER AMPHITHEATER, & DOWNTOWN LIBRARY

Economically astute, the City of Boca Raton purchased an existing 125,000 SF office/warehouse complex to renovate and expand into a 175,000 sf state-of-the-art POLICE & FIRE TRAINING administration complex. The training center has full A/V and distance learning capabilities. The facility was fully hardened and is able to withstand a Category 5 hurricane and designed to run 24/7 with system redundancy and card access security control. PGAL also Master Planned a south site of 20 acres to accommodate on the job training. Organized like a small city with each respective training unit contained within a zone of similar function, it includes EVOC driving course/officer obstacle course, canine course, a control tower with covered staging area, SWAT/Fire Tower/Survival City, Railway car access/Tanker Spill simulator, Fire Service vehicle maintenance, indoor shooting range, airCountyft firefighting simulator, CPAT/Classroom building, hazardous material training, storage tank burn simulators/vehicle extraction and confined space and trench rescue simulators. Delivering program with budget efficiency was key to the success of this project constructed during the height of the building boom.

The MIZNER PARK AMPHITHEATER is a mixed-use development in operation since 2000. The original amphitheater has a two-story colonnade for vendors on the ground floor and premium seating on the second level. The second level of the colonnade consisted of a wood trellis. Due to two years of active hurricane seasons, the wood trellis and the light fixture pendants received significant damage. PGAL was requested to provide some design concepts to replace the trellis with a canopy to provide shelter from the sun and rain utilizing the existing steel column supports. A portion of the colonnade was designed to receive an arched canopy; the remaining colonnade would receive an aluminum trellis for durability. The pendant light fixtures would be replaced with surface mounted light fixtures that complement the existing building architecture.

As a major business in Boca Raton for over 17 years, PGAL was honored  to be selected to design the City’s prominent DOWNTOWN LIBRARY which is slated to  be a LEED Silver Certified Library. A total of 42,000 sf of space was needed and was programmed working closely through a series of design charettes with the Library staff, Recreation Services, and  the Friends of the Library. Public meetings were  also held to gain consensus with the City Commission, business leaders and interested citizens as well. The design team’s goal was to provide a distinct sense of place, easy access and control, sensible orientation, functional workflow, user friendly bookstacks, uniform lighting, unique children’s and teen spaces, homework centers, ample and convenient parking, ADA Compliance and a safe and secure environment for the young and old. The exterior elevations  are a  traditional Mediterranean motif with an interior filled with ample natural light, comfortable furnishings, and state-of-the art technology. An outdoor plaza that can be enjoyed by all completes the City Center setting.
